5 Signs Your Leach Field Is Failing

Wet spots, slow drains and sewage smells all point underground. Here's what each one means — and how TerraLift fixes it without a new leach field.

Your leach field (also called a drain field) is the part of your septic system that returns treated water to the soil. When it stops absorbing, everything upstream backs up. Here's what to watch for.

1. Wet or spongy ground over the leach field

Standing water or soggy soil over the leach lines — especially when it hasn't rained — means water is surfacing instead of soaking in.

2. Bright green grass in stripes

Grass that's noticeably greener directly over the leach lines is being fed by effluent that's too close to the surface.

3. Slow drains all over the house

One slow sink is a clog. Every drain slowing down at once points to the septic tank or the leach field.

4. Sewage odor in the yard

A septic smell near the tank or the drain field is a sign wastewater isn't being absorbed.

5. Backups at the lowest drain

Water coming up in a basement floor drain, a downstairs shower or the cleanout means the system has nowhere to send it.

The fix: TerraLift

In most failing leach fields, the pipes are fine — the soil around them has compacted and sealed. TerraLift fractures that soil with high-pressure air and injects beads to keep it open, so your existing leach field drains again. Call BAM Septic Solutions at (530) 599-0993.
